Case Study :
Financial Data Collection and Analysis, Large Financial Portal, USA
- Opportunity
To collect Annual Financial data of a wide cross-section of companies and update
it on customer web site. Involves manual allocation under specific account heads
not commonly found on Balance Sheets
- About the Project
The client’s objective is to create the world’s largest investment research portal
for investors. The aim of this financial portal is to simplify the process of investing
by providing the complete story behind each company, thereby giving investors a
better idea of which stock or specific sector to invest in. Pi team’s challenge
was to update financial data for close to 2000 companies (listed on NYSE, NASADQ,
OTC) in record time and update them on an annual basis.
- Solution
Since the financial portal was already live, Pi team worked on sector wise companies
and uploaded the data live on a regular basis. The collection required understanding
the objective of the customer as they did not want to just copy and paste 10ks but
also segregate them under common metrics names so that investors could perform meaningful
research.
Apart from secondary research, Pi also used paid databases like Hoovers to get accurate
data. The team went through live training and understood a complex data feeder and
validation system which ensured that no metrics were missed out while researching.
This project is on-going and the financial portal is currently updating 2008 filing
information. The addition of the Company Research section has helped the portal
gain a large number of registered users.
